Subtropical Dairy Board

The nine person Subtropical Dairy Board currently comprises of five farmers (one of whom must be chair) and four persons with complementary business skills. The board appointments are for a three year term. The AGM is conducted in October/ November of each year.

30 year old Luke has managed the family farm in the Lockyer Valley for the past 12 years. The business milks a full jersey herd using a PMR system. Appointed to the Board in 2013, Luke is humbled by the opportunity to assist farmers through his involvement with Subtropical Dairy.  He believes that farmers are united by their ability to produce and provide a quality product and is passionate about the sustainability of the subtropical dairy industry. Member of the small project committee.

Matt is the owner of a 300 cow farm on 125 hectares at Moy Pocket in the Mary Valley, Queensland.

He is currently the Chair of the Upper Mary River Water Advisory Committee, a State Councillor for the QDO, and a Director for Premium Milk.

Additionally, Matt is a member of the Sunshine Coast Regional Group for Subtropical Dairy , a member of the Dairy Levy Advisory Committee and Chair of the Gympie branch of the Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation..

Regional Groups

The size and spread of the Subtropical Dairy area has led to the establishment of the Regional Groups. Each group can focus on issues specific to their own region and farming systems.

There are active groups in the Darling Downs/Burnett, South East Queensland, Central Queensland, Far North Queensland, Far North Coast of NSW and the Mid North Coast of NSW.

Specialising in subtropical environments, Brad’s has established his scientific career in applied dairy herd nutrition, and the development and extension of whole dairy farm systems. He has broadened his expertise in dairy supply management both pre and post farm gate and is experienced in senior business, organisation and project management. Appointed to his role in 2014, Brad is enthusiastic about the northern dairy industry and driving Subtropical Dairy to become a quality provider of services and information to the industry.

Belinda has been working in the dairy industry in Queensland since 1995, following her studies in Agricultural Science at the University of Queensland.  She worked for 10 years in a farm liaison-extension role with the Dept Primary Industries and Dairy Farmers.  During that time she lived in Toowoomba and spent most of her time working with farmers on the Darling Downs and the South Burnett.  In her more recent roles, Belinda has worked with farmers in the Young Dairy Network and on industry projects and natural disaster response teams.  Over the years Belinda has enjoyed working with dairy farmers and in their businesses and has built good working relationships with farmers and some great friendships.  Belinda and her husband, Mark, have 3 children and live in Highfields near Toowoomba.

Kylie began working in the dairy industry in 2004 when she commenced employment with the Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation (QDO) as an Executive Assistant. She left QDO late last year and joined the Subtropical Dairy team in January this year as an Extension Co-ordinator. Kylie has vast experience in event management, business administration, communication platforms and supporting farmers during disasters. She is very passionate about the dairy industry. Kylie lives in Brisbane with her three children.

Alicia comes from a family dairy farming background with her Uncle and Aunty still running the farm on the south coast of NSW.  She completed a Bachelor of Systems Agriculture at University of Western Sydney in 2007 focusing on dairy and marketing. She has been involved with showing and judging cattle and loves getting involved on the farm be it milking or other farm work.  She returns to the dairy industry after spending the last 6 years working primarily in the cotton industry focusing on operational process improvement, stewardship and product training programs with the regional field team, distributors and farmers.

Joanna was raised on Arthy Brothers dairy farm located south of Beaudesert and was involved in milking, mustering, herd management and record keeping. After completing high school, Joanna completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at the University of Queensland and moved to Mareeba in north Queensland for employment with DAFQ. Her role at this time was in plant pathology specialising in bacteriology and she was involved in a number of research projects involving field crops and horticulture crops. Not long after this Joanna became the project manager for a RIRDC funded cut flower and foliage project before resigning from DAFQ prior to the birth of her first child in 2006. In 2006, Joanna also completed a Masters of Agribusiness from the University of Queensland. Joanna returned to the dairy industry in 2017 where she now works as the Subtropical Dairy Regional Extension Coordinator for FNQ and as Industry Development Officer for the Dairying Better n’ Better program. Joanna thoroughly enjoys working in the dairy industry and is passionate about its future.

Since graduating from the University of New England with a degree in Rural Science, Viv has worked in both the Cotton and Dairy industry.  With a background in sales/marketing, business management, precision agriculture and natural resource management she commenced her role as program manager of the Young Dairy Network in 2009.  During this time Viv has worked with young dairy farmers, the coordinating team and stakeholders of the YDN to grow and continue the development of the network.  Viv and her husband Doug have 2 children and live at Hampton North of Toowoomba.

Di first developed in 2006 as part of her award winning project in the RIRDC Rural Woman of the Year awards and continues to manage the site on behalf of Subtropical Dairy. Experienced in facilitation and project management, Di remains passionate about the dairy industry and enjoys delivering programs that have positive outcomes for farmers. Di farms with her family on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
